HINO TRUCKS INNOVATIVE MODEL 195H NAMED ATD MEDIUM DUTY
COMMERCIAL TRUCK OF THE YEAR
Novi, Michigan – Hino Trucks Class 5 diesel-electric hybrid model 195h took home ATD’s 2013 Medium Duty Commercial Truck of the Year award. Hino has taken home this award each time a truck was submitted into the annual contest – Hino’s model 268 won in 2010and Model 338 won in 2011.
Hino 195h was selected for the medium-duty (Class 3-7) category after impressing the judges with its comfort, great visibility, maneuverability, high-tech equipment and smooth, fuel-saving operation. The trucks were selected from a field of five medium-duty trucks and a five-member panel of journalists evaluated the trucks last October. The judging categories included innovation, design, safety and driver satisfaction. “Every year the challenge is greater and greater,” said judge Paul Hartley, writer and owner of AddMedia.
“We are honored to once again accept this prestigious award from the American Truck Dealers Association.” said Bob McDowell, Sr. Vice President of Sales & Customer Support for Hino. “The innovation and technical advancements in our 195h diesel-electric hybrid are unmatched in the industry today. We successfully launched the truck this fall in California and we are happy to report that to date, we have deployed 130 trucks into the Californian market.” Hino Trucks will continue its roll out of the 195h model by offering it through its dealers in the Eastern, Northeast, Southeast and Sunbelt metropolitan areas in April, and all states by June.

In Memory of Mrs. Margaret Mason
Columbus Truck is sad to announce the loss of one of our original founding family members, Mrs. Margaret Mason. Mrs. Mason passed away on the afternoon of June 13th, 2012. Margaret was the wife of General Ray E. Mason, who founded Columbus Truck in 1949. Margaret was preceded in death by Mr. Mason, who passed away in August of 2010. Mr. and Mrs. Mason devoted their lives to community service, and were great supporters of the Columbus area – including the Columbus Foundation and The Ohio State University. Their leadership and community spirit will be greatly missed by all.
MASON HALL RENOVATIONS AT OHIO STATE
Columbus Truck’s founder’s legacy lives on at Mason Hall on the campus of The Ohio State University

Photos of the renovated Mason Hall on The Ohio State University campus. At left, Ray Mason III, President of Columbus Truck, speaks at the re-dedication.
From open and flexible spaces encouraging interaction to a café serving Starbucks coffee, the changes to Mason Hall have been designed to create a buzz. One of the major goals was to create an experiential learning environment for students.
Throughout the updated building, named for alumnus Maj. Gen. Raymond E. Mason, Jr. (Founder of Columbus Truck), are areas for both informal and formal interaction.
“Things have changed since Mason Hall opened 12 years ago. We wanted to push the envelope in terms of exemplifying work in a high tech culture,” said David Greenberger, chair of the renovation committee and chair of the Department of Management and Human Resources. “We wanted those synergies and shared spaces. We wanted to create more of a sense of community and encourage students to use Mason as a gathering place.”
Other highlights of the renovation include:
Large and comfortable study areas, conference rooms, and 21 student breakout rooms
Administrative offices for units with a focus on experiential learning
A multipurpose space for classes, receptions, and special events in the second floor rotunda named for Daniel E. and Avarina Edwards, the parents of Margaret Mason
Other changes are noticeable before even stepping inside. A landscape designer working with the lead architectural firm — the same Boston-based firm that originally designed Mason — developed plans for outdoor tables with umbrellas, new walkways, and floral gardens.

Volvo XE13 Wins TWNA Technical Achievement Award

Ed Saxman, Volvo Trucks product manager – powertrain, with the 2011 TWNA Technical Achievement Award.
The Truck Writers of North America (TWNA) have recognized the Volvo XE13 powertrain package as the top technical achievement for 2011. The award presentation took place at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition.
“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by the Truck Writers of North America,” says Ron Huibers, president, Volvo Trucks North American sales and marketing. “We truly appreciate their thorough evaluations of our XE13 package, a proprietary solution that provides just a glimpse at the future potential of Volvo Trucks’ integrated powertrain.”
To be eligible for the Technical Achievement Award, a product or service has to clearly exhibit technical innovation, have a wide applicability in the trucking industry, offer significant benefits, and be widely available. While complete vehicles are not eligible, components and systems are.
The six finalists for 2011 are: The Bendix EverSure spring brake; the Fontaine/Volvo integrated fifth wheel; Goodyear’s G392 SSD/SST DuraSeal wide-base tires; RigDig’s Truck History Reports; Spectra’s Hub Alert; and the Volvo XE13 powertrain package.
Ranking at the top among the finalists, the Volvo XE13 powertrain package earned the top honor of the 2011 TWNA Technical Achievement Award. The XE13 (exceptional efficiency) package introduces the concept of “downspeeding,” by combining a set of specifications ― including Volvo’s I-Shift automated manual transmission ― that collectively allow the engine to run about 200 rpm slower than the average truck sold today, the company says. That translates to a fuel savings of about 3 percent compared to a similarly specified truck with an overdrive transmission, according to Volvo.
TWNA award committee member John Baxter says the XE13 concept “represents a sea-change in thinking as far as how the drivetrain is to be put together and could also drive a serious shift to automated transmissions in the future. It will certainly help to squeeze more energy out of each gallon of fuel.”
